Position title: Communication Design Artist
Position Reports to: Steven Sullivan, Hefner Museum director, and Julie Robinson, Cecilia Berg Center for Environmental Education director
Hours of Work: 8 hours/week at $8.30/hour for 8 weeks. This is a grant-funded term-limited position that begins immediately. All work must be completed, submitted and approved by November 30, 2018.
The Hefner Museum of Natural History, Miami University, seeks one Communication Design undergraduate to execute graphic and layout work associated with the publication of a set of educational kits aimed at the K-12 classroom. The Communication Design artist will focus on the technicalities of digital typesetting, indexing, formatting, and overall layout necessary to create vibrant and engaging instructional manuals and student worksheets. The artist will also generate graphic illustrations and photographs to accompany the text, as well as create promotional materials to market the kits.
Individuals need to be self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision, have independent access to the necessary software, able to creatively translate analog information into a digital format, receptive to feedback and able to quickly modify projects based on the feedback, and apply a graphic style that is consistent with the pedagogical needs of the publications.
Production schedules will be rigorous; students must be able to clock in and out on campus to complete work.
Prospective employees must:
Submit a portfolio demonstrating proficiency in software, ability to illustrate objects in a way that is useful for instruction, a good sense of space and color
Participate in an in-person or remote interview with Steve Sullivan and Julia Robinson.
Manage time efficiently.
Proactively seek supervisor input and plan project tasks.
Be currently enrolled at Miami University in Communication Design or related field.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
